I am a sophomore Accounting major at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. I am interested in learning all I can about the world of Accounting Professionals and was hoping that I could get some valuable feedback on here about some of the most important things for an Accounting major to know.
You will find a wealth of information through your states AICPA chapter. Join, volunteer, network. Hang out with accounting professionals. They are people too with varieties of personalities and you will find accountants that match your personality and you will hit it off well with some and others, not so well. The ones that show interest in you and what you are trying to accomplish (I Assume its the CPA designation) have walked in your shoes and they know the walk is not just down the street. They will advise you. Chose a mentor from the professionals you meet from the ones that show interest in you. Personalities together that work well when meetings take place are opportunities in disguise... they lead to information, employment, and much more. Ask questions of those you establish a connection with. Get a business card and email address, follow up with your prospective mentors by sending a card, or a thank you note expressing gratitude for the time taken to discuss the profession with you and in the same note, ask for another meeting. Be persistent, but not to the point of being annoying. Ask for leads to other professionals that you may mix well with. Make those contacts. And always ask if you can mention the professionals name who is making the referral. Its a journey of information. Take what you need, always show you are thankful, always show respect and honor to those who help grow your paths to success.
I joined after I read this. I think the profession is interesting. Your information helped me and I will join other groups. Does anyone recommend other groups to join? I like this site and everyone's information.
Go to ISACA.com website. Here you can learn about what you need to do in order to obtain the CISA designation (Certified Information Systems Auditor). Membership fees varies by state and region. With the student membership you get discounts on exam materials, etc.. They also offer scholarships to students (I never applied because I joined them less than a year ago). If you enjoy taking Accounting Information Systems classes then this is the website you need to go to.
